President’s Report:
Our division has set a new record for the speed at which we’ve sold our trip to Ireland tickets. Congratulations to JP McCusker and all who made sales. The calendar is filling out for the first few months of the year. We need help planning events starting in late May. Bart Emanuel will be traveling, so we need a new chair for the Hunger Project. In the immediate future, we need to perform our annual audit. It will happen on Wednesday, February 11, at 10 am One of our members raised the issue of whether his dues should be waived, as he is eligible to be classified as a lifetime member. There are five in our division who qualify. We still do not have an Organizer for the calendar, so Brian will fill in. Along with the audit, this coming weekend we were scheduled for raffle ticket sales, but it was taken off the calendar since we’re basically sold out. Next Tuesday, Prince William County will issue a proclamation for Irish Heritage Month at 2 pm. Saturday, Feb 21, is the State Quarterly Meeting, at Our Lady of Angels Church, in the school building from 9 am to noon. Monday, Feb 23, the City of Manassas will also issue a proclamation for Irish Heritage Month. Give Vince 24 hours’ notice if you intend to attend either proclamation. Show up fifteen minutes in advance. Our road cleanup is rescheduled for later in the month due to snow. It is now scheduled for Saturday, Feb 28, 9 am to 10 am on Stonewall Road. Later that day, at 1 pm, is the funeral Mass for brother Hibernian Jim Adams at St. Andrew’s. Our last officer’s meeting was at Ornery Brewing Company. We will meet there again on March 5 at 7 pm. On March 7 is the Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day parade. We will go to St. Murphy’s Irish Pub beforehand for breakfast (or drinks). Monday, March 9, will be our regular monthly business meeting, as the Gaelic Mass has been moved to the eve of St. Patrick’s Day. Saturday, March 14, is the Manassas St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Meet at Old Towne Sports Pub beforehand for fellowship. We do need Marshals for the parade. That evening will be the St. Patrick’s Dinner, but it is not cosponsored by us; it is handled solely by the George Brent council. The Trip to Ireland raffle drawing will be held at Old Towne Sports Pub on Tuesday, March 17, at 6 pm. Later that week, on Friday March 20, is the Fish Fry we are volunteering to help with at the George Brent Knights of Columbus. The price of the meal has gone up by a dollar. April has our Past President’s Dinner, and we are looking at Logan’s Roadhouse since City Tavern has changed its private party room into a billiards hall. JP will be meeting with Logan’s Roadhouse this week. On Friday, April 24, 5-9 pm is the All Saints Parish festival. AOH will be cleaning up the garbage. We will also clean up the garbage the following day. In May, the Beer Tasting is on May 15. New venue this year, Honor Brewing Fairfax location. Same veteran organizations, Able Forces and TAPS. Honor Brewing is giving AOH a flat price. Honor Brewing will promote the event on its social media. Mike Gajewski will take over from Bart for the Hunger Project. Vince will chair the golf tournament, hopefully in early May. Greg Gibbons says the Whiskey Tasting may take place in May. Mike Gajewski might also be running a winery visit later this year. There are also tentative plans for the summer to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We can reserve a table for twelve to fifteen people at the officers’ club. To make up for the St. Patrick’s Dinner not being cosponsored by the AOH, we may do a club room trivia night. We are also thinking of a halfway-to-St. Patrick’s Day clubroom event with Irish entertainment, possibly Tim Trant. Pat Sullivan reminds us that the Organizer’s main role is not just to manage the calendar but also to manage new membership. Vince informs us that this Friday, he will be cooking a Shepard’s pie at the KoC at 6 pm, and 40 percent of the net income will go to the division. $8 for the food.
Proposition of candidates for membership:
None
Report on the calendar of events:
It was part of the president’s report.
Reports by special committees:
Chaplain’s homily:
N/A
Charities:
Greg Rebbert is our Charities Chair. Starting next month, reporting on charities we have donated to and reading letters from them.
Freedom for All Ireland:
Dominic Preston: In Ireland, they’ve been flooded with gale-force winds and raining every day. The President of Ireland has said that languages should never divide us in a visit to Northern Ireland. The trip did not go well as she is promoting the Irish language in both sides of Ireland. Most politicians in Northern Ireland are now nationalists and Catholics, so they are talking about unifying the island.
Standing Committee and grievances:
Dennis Connolly: He reports that a get-well card was sent to Joe Martin, and another to Gerry Ulrich due to his ankle injury. Our brother Paul Huber, our pro-life chairman, says he’s in NYC for a doctor’s appointment.
Historian
Johnny McLaughlin: Saint Senan – Apostle of Ireland: a saint prophesied by Saint Patrick himself to minister to the people of modern-day County Limerick and County Clare. Banished the sea monster Cathach from Slattery Island and founded a monastery there.
Hunger project
Immigration
Brian Tumulty: He read a statement issued by the national AOH: The AOH is a non-partisan organization that does not endorse political parties or candidates. Cannot remain silent when groups are mocked by racist imagery, such as the imagery of the Obamas as apes, hearkening back to the racist imagery of the Irish back in the 1800s.
Project St. Patrick
Pro-Life
No report. Paul Huber is in New York for a physician’s appointment.
Veterans Affairs
Doug Morrison isn’t here, but he sent the report. In January and February 1991, Doug was a member of the 1st Infantry’s cavalry squadron. This is the 30th anniversary of Desert Storm. The group played a critical role in Desert Storm, led the first infantry division assault into Iraq, capturing over 3000 soldiers. Played a major role in Objective Norfolk. His squadron was awarded the unit’s equivalent of the Silver Star.
Report on the sick and visitations
Unfinished Business:
Tom Maserick reported on the March for Life, marched with two fellow AOH members
New Business:
Dave Ralston: Save the date for Sunday, April 26. Mark Forrest is performing at St. Andrew’s, free of charge. After the concert, there will be a reception, and our division will have a table for recruitment purposes. Tom Masarick gave a financial report on bills and claims. JP has 13 tickets, with a few more tickets in circulation.
Good and welfare of the Order
Greg Gibbons: Dennis Connolly is sick, with prostate cancer and now bladder cancer. He’s about 95% of the way through that. One of our other brothers is ill. Chris: First neighbor passed away, second neighbor’s mom passed away. Johnny: Dad has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s
Closing Prayers (ask attendees for their intentions):
Prayer to St. Jude: Saint Jude, glorious Apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus: The name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many, but the true Church invokes you universally as the Patron saint of difficult cases, and things almost despaired of. Please pray for us, as we are so helpless and alone. Intercede with God for us that He bring visible and speedy help. Come to our assistance in this great need that we may receive the consolation and help of Heaven in all our necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly for those in need under our Good and Welfare of the order, and that we may bless God with the Elect throughout eternity. Amen. Saint Jude, Apostle, martyr, and relative of our Lord Jesus Christ, of Mary and St. Joseph, intercede for us. Amen. Closing Prayer In the name of St. Patrick, the Glorious Apostle of Ireland, I declare this meeting closed. Grant, O Lord, who makes the minds of the faithful to be of one will, that we, thy people, may love what you have commanded, and desire what you have promised, and that amid the changes of the world our hearts may ever love and obey Thee, through Christ Our Lord, Amen. Let us pray for our deceased Brothers. All say: Our Father3 Hail MarysGlory Be President: Eternal Rest grant to them, O Lord. Members: And let perpetual light shine upon them. President: May they rest in peace. Members: Amen. PRAYERS FOR VOCATIONS Hail Mary
