  • Presidents Report:

The 2020 AOH ladies national convention will be conducted virtually on July, 17 and 18th through July, 25. We are entitled to one delegate and an alternate delegate there will be a virtual meeting for delegates on July, 14, to listen to national director candidates. The, the delegates vote on the candidates that represent us to the national office. State President Jay McCarthy sent out an email to Virginia AOH divisions asking for contact information of division members to be updated. And we are e in the process of looking at the list they sent us to update. There was a motion and a second at the June meeting to send a donation of $250 to Biking for Babies to support our Chaplain Fr. Ed Guilloux. That check has been sent. Please help our brothers and their families and friends and neighbors by donating money or food to area food pantries.

Just a quick report on the potato famine. Our ancestors are familiar with war, famine death and disease. The Irish potato famine, famine, also known as The Great Hunger began in 1845 with the fungus like organism. The infestation ruined up to one half of the potato crop that year and about three quarters of the crop over the next three years. Because the farmers of Ireland relied heavily, heavily on potatoes as a source of food, the infestation had a catastrophic impact on Ireland and its population. Before it ended in 1852, the potato famine resulted in the death of roughly 1 million Irish from starvation and related costs with at least another 1 million that left the homeland is refugees. And that concludes the President’s report.

ImmigrationRick RingJune 10 after his 24-year legal battle to seek asylum, and gain permanent residency in the United States, Malacky McAllister, a 62-year-old grandfather, was deported by  DHS.  Mr. McAllister was a New Jersey resident and respected leader in the Irish community, who came to America after escaping an assassination attempt in Northern Ireland. He lived peacefully in the United States and was legally seeking permanent residency. He was a member of the AOH and also had started two successful businesses in the U.S. A statement from Judge James F. McKay, the third president of the AOH, the largest Irish American organization in America, said, “It is with profound sadness that we learned about the deportation of Malacky McAlister after 24-year long struggle to obtain permanent residency in the United States. In this action, we have been forced to say goodbye to a member and a brother.”
Trip to IrelandJ.P./GregDan O’Leary spoke in favor of going ahead with the fundraiser. He said, “If we stick to our typical routine doing this, I think we have nothing to lose.” He suggested going ahead with the kickoff on Sept. 17 at the Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day event at the Old Town Sports Pub, which has converted half of its parking lot into outdoor seating. JP McCusker said the cost of printing the raffle tickets is $290.07. A motion was made to go ahead and pay for the raffle tickets to be printed. The discussion included comments about the charities that benefit from the money raised through this fundraiser and how they rely on the donations. Dan said that rough things may change, and they will change, but we just may have to be a little more creative Motion to print the tickets was passed with only one no vote.

BingoTom MasarickWe recently had our first bingo with about 50 people. We didn’t do the best job in the world advertising. The website was late getting updated. We have since updated it. We have put two people to a table to observe the CDC six-foot distancing guidelines. We’re going to resume Thursday and Sunday. We did have food. Dave Riley was in here and we did have Sloppy Joe’s. We reduced the payoff. At some point we will resume the bingo kitchen. We want the people to come back first. There’s Plexiglas that’s up here. And all of us that work wear masks and shields. The president asked if the bingo kitchen teams will be ready to begin working the kitchen again. He said he understands completely people that are not willing and wants to get a count and then determine if members are willing to fill in with the team that needs help. The AOH is supposed to do the first Sunday of every month.
