- Presidents Report: The 2020 AOH and LAOH national convention will be virtual this year with our president as delegate and vice president as alternate.
The state president Jay McCarthy recently sent out a summary of state activity.
State membership is essentially flat. Coronavirus has not helped with recruitment and we are encouraged to recruit new members.
The divisions in our state collectively contributed $67,571 to charity last year.
AOH members are encouraged to reach out and determine if members need any help. The division has money and the state has money to provide assistance for food or to prevent evictions.
Our president asked about the relative benefit of Zoom versus Google Meet.
One member said they are essentially the same.
Presently all the events our division was scheduled to participate in are either closed or on hold until the coronavirus restrictions have been lifted for Northern Virginia.
Bart Emmanuel is working on the Hunger Project
Hopefully, we will get an email out with details. There are a lot of people that need that need assistance in the Manassas area. If you could donate either money or food to the Hunger Project, it would be appreciated.

Freedom for all Ireland | Tom Masarick | FFAI’s mission to achieve complete and absolute independence for all Ireland through all legitimate means, promoting peace within justice, and unity. In a sentence, that’s really what they’re trying to do. Each year, the Christmas appeal funding drive is held at a national level, to support organizations that are crucial to building and maintaining the peace in Northern Ireland, while building towards a complete and absolute independence, promoting peace, and unity. The next piece that I want to talk about are the conditions for peace. We have the six counties that the British are helping us with, and then we’ve got the rest of Ireland we want unified. The root cause for the conflict in Ireland is the denial of democracy through refusal of the British government to allow the Irish people to exercise their right to national self-determination. The solution to conflict in Ireland lies in the democratic exercise of the right to form the national reunification, national independence and sovereignty. We are calling for free elections in all of Ireland’s counties. It is only through the process of decolonization and a dialogue that a peaceful, stable Ireland will emerge. |

Charities | Rich Aleksy | We need to start thinking about charities. We also need to think about seminarians. Rich Ring said we also will have an opportunity to move budgeted money over to charities. Father Ed, according to the president, is going on a long-distance bike trip of 600 miles in seven days and raising money for it. He’s looking for $50 each from as many people as he can get. You can look on Father Ed’s Facebook page for more information. |

President John said the winner of the Trip to Ireland Raffle does plan on traveling to Ireland but is holding off on traveling for now.
Recording Secretary Brian Tumulty made a motion for the division to vote at the next meeting in July on whether to extend the deadline for the winner of the Trip to Ireland Raffle to take the trip by six months until Sept. 30, 2021.
Rich Ring and other members voiced their support for a six-month extension. The current deadline is March 2021.
The motion was approved unanimously by voice vote.
Vince said we still have not heard back from many people who want their money back from the parade
Tom M said that every Tuesday at 7 pm we do the rosary on WebEx and anyone who wants to participate is welcome to contact him.
Hugh O’Brien read aloud parts of a recent New York Times story about the link between the Chocktaw Indians and Ireland going back to the Great Hunger.
More than 170 years ago, the Choctaw Nation sent $170 to starving Irish families during the potato famine. A sculpture in County Cork commemorates the generosity of the tribe, itself poor. In recent decades, ties between Ireland and the Choctaws have grown. Recently, a fundraiser in Ireland has raised $1.8 million for the Navajo and the Hopi Indians to deal with COVID-19.
