Immigration report AOH September 2024
For the third consecutive year, the number of people seeking a better life in Ireland has continued to outnumber the people who left, according to a new report by Ireland’s Central Statistics Office
149,200 immigrants arrived in Ireland in the 12 months ending in April, marking a 17-year high and more than double the 69,000 people who left the Emerald Isle.
It also marked the third consecutive year with an influx of more than 100,000 people.
Of those immigrants, 30,000 were returning Irish citizens, 27,000 were other EU citizens, and 5,400 were UK citizens.
The remaining 86,800 immigrants were citizens of other countries, including refugees fleeing Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the number of people leaving Ireland to immigrate to other countries reached a 9-year high.
The August 27 press release said annual departures reached over 69,000, an uptick of 5,000 from the year before.
But that’s only a trickle compared to the many Irish who left for a better life a century earlier.
A natural increase of 19,400 people in the State comprised 54,200 births and 34,800 deaths.
